“Food is our common ground, a universal experience.” – James Beard

The Jamaica Food and Drink Festival (JFDF) has solidified itself as Jamaica’s premier gastronomical event, and I had the privilege of attending the launch of its 10th-anniversary celebration on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at the Jamaica Food and Drink Kitchen. Initially set for the Port Royal Naval Dock, the event was moved due to inclement weather. But as the invitation boldly stated, the launch would go on “Rain or Shine”—and what a night it turned out to be!

Jamaica Food and Drink Festival 2024 Launches with a Decade of Culinary Excellence

From the moment I stepped in, I could feel the excitement in the air. The décor was vibrant, with eye-catching photo ops at every turn, perfect for capturing the “festival” vibe. The energy was amplified by DJ Nova, who had guests dancing and enjoying every moment. Her playlist was the ideal backdrop, setting the tone for a night that was equal parts fun and informative.

Select Brands Bar

After a quick tour of the space, I headed straight to the Select Brands Bar to try one of their signature cocktails. I decided on the Absolut Passion—a refreshing mix of Absolut Vodka, Finest Call, Passion Fruit, and Simple Syrup. For those feeling adventurous, the Absolut Spicy Lemonade with jalapeño slices was also a hit, and for wine lovers, there was a choice between Robert Mondavi Private Selection Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

No Jamaican event is complete without soup, and Chef Theo of Great House Caterers delivered with his Vegan Pumpkin Soup, featuring pumpkin seeds and a coconut milk drizzle, in collaboration with Caribbean Dreams. The unique texture of the seeds gave this traditional dish an unexpected twist that was simply delightful.

I then made my way over to the Worthy Park Select Bar, where I sampled the “Value Punch,” a flavorful concoction of Worthy Park Select, Worthy Park Overproof, pineapple juice, cherry juice, lime juice, Amaretto Liqueur, and bitters. The punch was a perfect balance of sweet and sour with the unmistakable kick of overproof rum—a true crowd-pleaser.

Jamaica Food and Drink Festival, Festival Director, Alicia Bogues gives an overview of this year’s staging of the event

As the festivities continued, Festival Director Alicia Bogues took the stage to formally launch the event and celebrate the festival’s 10th year. In her remarks, she shared:

“We kick off on November 7th with Kuyah. We’re heading back downtown to our roots; Jamaican food, re-imagined. We are so much more than sun, sand, sea, and jerk! Friday night, we spice things up with a new event called Decade. Decade is suiting, of course, as we are celebrating 10 years. Decade will also feature festival favorites like Crisp, Pork Palooza, Chopstix, and Picante, all in one space. It’s an ode to the past—a culinary celebration of all that’s made us who we are today.”

Her enthusiasm was contagious, and the excitement among attendees was palpable. Bogues also highlighted the addition of new events and fan favorites, including Meet Street and the Market on November 9th at Hope Gardens and the highly anticipated Premium Brunch on November 10th. Another major highlight this year is the Chef’s Table event, featuring Miami-based Chef José Mendin from Pubbelly Sushi and Chef Mathieu Masson-Duceppe from Chopped.

Chef Andre Fowles will also make a return to the festival, courtesy of Scotiabank, along with newcomers 2 Girls and a Cookshop, who will bring their signature Jamaican Tacos™ to the lineup, blending Jamaican and Brooklyn flair.

As if that wasn’t enough, Visa, the festival’s presenting partner, is offering exclusive discounts on tickets purchased with Visa cards until October 31, 2024. Patrons also have the chance to win exciting prizes, including a trip to Miami—so there’s never been a better time to secure your spot at the festival.

Following the announcements, I indulged in more culinary delights. I opted for selections from the brunch menu, including Scotch Bonnet Poached Shrimp with Papaya and Charred Pineapple Salsa and Pimento Smoked Meatballs Pomodoro with Dark Rum Roasted Garlic Spaghetti. The flavors were bold and innovative—a testament to the level of talent and creativity the festival attracts.

If this launch was any indication of what’s to come, we’re in for an unforgettable experience at this year’s Jamaica Food and Drink Festival. Be sure to grab your tickets early and stay updated on all the festivities by visiting the festival’s website.
