The Met Gala is one of the most significant events in the fashion industry, where celebrities, designers, and influencers come together to showcase their most extravagant and eye-catching outfits. This annual fundraising event is organized by the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City, and every year it has a different theme that sets the tone for the event.
The Met Gala 2023: Exploring the Theme “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”
For the Met Gala 2023, the theme is “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty?” This article will explore the theme, its significance, and what to expect from the event.
Who was Karl Lagerfeld?
Karl Lagerfeld was a renowned German fashion designer who passed away in 2019. He was one of the most influential and prolific designers in the fashion industry, known for his innovative and eclectic designs. Lagerfeld was also a creative director and worked for fashion houses such as Chanel, Fendi, and his eponymous brand. He was famous for his distinctive style, which combined classical elegance with modern elements, and his ability to predict fashion trends. His legacy is still evident in the fashion world, and the Met Gala 2023 will celebrate his contribution to the industry.
What is “A Line of Beauty?”
“A Line of Beauty” is a term coined by the eighteenth-century artist William Hogarth to describe the concept of beauty in art. He believed that there was a natural “line of grace” that was pleasing to the eye and that this line could be found in both natural and man-made objects. The term “line of beauty” refers to the serpentine curve that he believed was present in beautiful objects. This curve is also known as the “S-curve” and is found in nature in the shape of a river, a plant stem, or a human figure.
How does Karl Lagerfeld fit into the theme?
Karl Lagerfeld was known for his attention to detail and his ability to combine classical and modern elements in his designs. He was a master of creating silhouettes that accentuated the natural curves of the body, and his designs often incorporated the S-curve. Lagerfeld was also a collector of art and antiques, and his designs often referenced classical art and architecture. His ability to combine different styles and eras makes him a perfect fit for the “A Line of Beauty” theme.
On this year’s Red Carpet, we saw a few celebrities who were on the theme and embodied the Karl Lagerfeld aesthetic, while there were others who fell short and some missed the mark altogether. Rihanna was the last celebrity to grace the red carpet and shut things down in a beautiful white Maison Valentino gown with a long, sweeping train. Plus, a structured ivory top covered in the signature “Chanel Camellia” rosettes, completely engulfed her torso and head. She finished the look off with opera-length fingerless gloves and a pair of white sunglasses with attached faux eyelashes.
Her beau A$AP Rocky wore a Gucci ensemble, consisting of a black blazer, a white collared dress shirt, and a high-low red plaid pleated kilt layered over a pair of bedazzled baggy jeans. (The outfit references a similar look that Lagerfeld once wore to close out the Chanel runway in 2004).
