“Soca is the Soul of the Caribbean”, were the opening comments from “The King of Soca” Machel Montano at the Press Conference for WiFete, recently at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel.

WiFete dubbed as the “Ultimate Music Festival,” which will feature well-known Soca artists like Machel Montano, Nailah Blackman, and Bunji Garlin (to name a few), will take place on Saturday, April 15, 2023, in Kingston, Jamaica, at Sabina Park, South Camp Road.

The Press Conference saw notable guests such as The Honourable, CD, MP, Minister Olivia “Babsy” Grange, Councillor and Entrepreneur Andrew Bellamy, Media Personnel, Entrepreneurs, and Carnival Enthusiasts in attendance as they gathered to learn about the upcoming event.

The stage was set (literally) and the man of the Hour, Machel Montano, made his way front and centre and spoke about his return to Jamaica and the presence of his complete band for the first time. In order to make Soca fully mainstream, he emphasized the significance of “paying it forward in the Industry.” He said that since we are all residents of the Caribbean, we should all take the initiative to raise awareness of Soca, Carnival, and Caribbean culture.

“This is about all a WI (WE), so I’m gonna mention that as many times as feasible. I am not the star here today at all, it’s all about Jamaica Carnival. I discovered a lesson when I mistakenly believed that my goal was to constantly make music reflect in its purest form.

“I began to see that my purpose was to share the highest manifestation of who I am with others. If we understand that, life is infinite, until eternity”.

He continued by saying that “Soca is the story of Carnival” and that it is the Caribbean’s story that is expressed in various ways all over the world. That’s where WI (WE) comes back into play and that is why Jamaica was picked as the place to debut the Music Festival.

As the event progressed, “Lady Montano”, Machel’s Mom made her way on stage to speak about the launch of Machel’s book and a special collaboration with the University of the West Indies, Mona (UWI).

She expressed that Machel’s journey included several key players, for which she can be named as the main motivator and supporter of his rise to fame in the Entertainment/Soca Industry.
