Designer Lubica returns to the runway at Fashion Art Toronto
Given the tenor of the times, the collection dubbed as “BLACK” is evident that it is somewhat different yet similar to previous collections as it featured a mix of minimalism style with a touch of sexy. Think Star Trek meets undercover agent meets superhero/vixen and you will get a clear visual.
The inspiration behind the collection is simple, it’s inspired by life and all the things she likes to wear. After all, art should imitate life!
Though the pieces were spectacular and vibrant, Lubica stated that she was a bit nervous presenting at the event.
It was nerve-wracking at first. I haven’t done a show in a long time and I wanted to make sure that I create something that reflects my style and that people will like it. Watching the show on the runway from backstage was such an amazing feeling. I had my stylist and best friend Fidge Fletcher ( @thestylefactorinc) there with me and that helped a lot!
We have done many shows together so having her help me style this collection (even at 8 months pregnant) was just amazing.
It is a great feeling to get so much positive feedback. I wanted to make a fun/ wearable collection and I think I achieved that.
Though the collection featured key colors: Black, Gold, and White, her signature sheer panel cutout were included along with the sexy yet minimalistic aesthetic. This was seen in a futuristic a-symmetric black jumpsuit with gold see-through details along the bustline as well as a figure-hugging white midi dress with cutouts. Another important aspect of the collection that was cleverly included, was the Jamaican Dancehall culture! Models were styled in a high-fashion blunt cut bob with a bang and a bold red lip that would be the perfect look for a hot Jamaican party. According to Lubica:
I always infuse Jamaica into my fashion. In the designs and in the music (styling etc). I lived in Jamaica for over 12 years and it is part of me. I use dancehall music and dancehall remixes as my show music in almost every show. I used it in this one too and many people came up to me after asking for the playlist and telling me they were Shazaming the songs. That made me so happy lol.
Lubica’s collection at Fashion Art Toronto was a breath of fresh air on the runway as it signified her comeback! The collection can also be considered an ode to Jamaican Dancehall culture coupled with each look that was out of this world.
