The Toxic Side of Fast Fashion | What’s in Your Clothing?

It is no secret I love Fashion! This Blog started because of my love for Fashion and of course writing. Now that I’m in my 30s it’s more about quality over quantity and as a result, I’ve limited my purchasing decisions to purchasing as many sustainable items as I can find (which is hard in Jamaica) and I do not support Fast- Fashion sites like Fashion Nova no matter how many people and their Grandmas support the brand.

During my weekly “Fashion Research” I came across an interesting video on YouTube by a creator in Canada that looks on the Toxic side of the Fashion industry.

Here, she focused specifically on Fast- Fashion from a forensic/ scientific side where she worked with a few scientists to test exactly what is in the material (fabric) used in a few of these Fast- Fashion designs and the top one was LEAD!! Yes LEAD, up to 600 parts per million which is way more than necessary as the standard amount is 0.15 in the US.

This is to all my Fashionistas who purchase items and remove from bags and wear right away without washing. Not only are your clothing dirty, but it can make you sick and lead to long-term illnesses like Cancer. I have known of so many people who have no critical illnesses in their families and wonder where they get it from — it’s from your clothing sis!

Wash your Fast-Fashion Clothing before you wear it.

5-7 Fashions Seasons Instead of 2

Fast Fashion

Because of the demand for clothing and how fast people are able to turn over these “designs” there are several Fashion Seasons as opposed to 2 in previous years.

Since clothing is so cheap and people want to “keep up with trends” especially if they are influencers; they can easily throw away literally tons of clothing without giving it a second thought. Where does all the clothing end up you ask? In the landfills — sure we do not have that issue in Jamaica (yet) but if you were to go to the Riverton Dump, a vast majority of the waste you see, will be clothing. The worst part about this is Fabric is not soluble and does not break down easily, so it will have to be burned which affects our respiratory system and can lead to things like Asthma. In the states, these items are dumped and left in piles and mounds until they are compressed and sometimes also burned.

It Makes You Poor

Remember that woman on the Internet who went into USD$100,000 debt just because she wanted to keep up with all the trends? Never heard of her? Click the text below to watch the video.

More, and more people are going broke trying to keep up with the Joneses. Social Media creates this unrealistic reality, where people see their favourite influencers who create the perception that people need to constantly buy items they recommend to be relevant and visible. I am here to let you know, that is a lie and you do not need stuff to make you relevant if it will make you go into debt.

If you are a lover of Fashion and quality items or work in the industry, simply create a budget where you put a small percentage of your income each month to make purchases.

Conclusion

Fast-Fashion gives people access to trends and cheap clothing in a short amount of time. However, Fast Fashion is also toxic. It can be detrimental to your health and if not carefully limited, it can make you go broke.

Let me know in the comments section if you prefer Fast-Fashion or Sustainable Fashion.
