Created by model, stylist, and, now, designer Renee Bishop, Deity New York launched the womenswear label in 2020, during the pandemic. Described as clothing “derived [from] European tradition and influences of city life,” the Manhattan-based label creates luxury, utilitarian pieces such as corset jumpsuits and wrap tuxedo blouses meant to bring empowerment and elegance to women everywhere. Deity New York’s runway made their NYFW debut on September 11.
The collection featured muted, earth tone structured pieces which included : a leather set where a cropped blazer was paired with knee length shorts, a white dress with sheer side-panel cut-outs, that can be dressed up or down, There were a number of Asymmetric and de-constructed tops as well a pair of high-waisted satin “booty” shorts which was paired with a sheer white top.

The colour story was quite interesting, as it went from browns to pinks and greens that did not compliment each other but simply “went” with each other in an unlikely way you wouldn’t think would work. We do appreciate that the colours were more neutral and borders a classic aesthetic as designer pieces are considered as an investment and once we purchase, they should be worn for a number of years and not just once as is the case with most expensive clothing. The pieces were not anything we haven’t seen before, but it was how they were paired + styled and also the textures and fabric used to tell the story.
The collection played homage to the 90s era with how simplistic and natural things were where clothing were put together so effortlessly and chic! It reminded me of the EnVogue and Girl Group era where there were always well coordinated leather pieces that went really well together.
We also appreciated that a number of the pieces are ready -to- wear versus “art pieces” that look great on the runway but would not be considered as wearable.
It was a stellar presentation and we are excited to see what the designer has in store for the future.
