Nicole Miller is known known for her uniquely charming fashion sensibility – irreverence, color, playful patterns and prints – but this summer, the designer has branched into new territory. With her rosé wine line, the CFDA member is nodding to her French heritage and exploring a new dimension to her creativity.

In celebration of her new venture – and perfectly in season – we caught up with Miller to hear more about the process of launching her eponymous wine label.

What inspired you to start your own wine label?

Being half-French, I have many French friends. One of them happens to be a wine distributor. In one of our many conversations, we came up with the idea of creating a rosé. My friend had a great connection to Chateau Auguste in the Bordeaux region. After many tastings we settled on a blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot grapes.

What makes your rosé different from others in the market?

I think most people are more familiar with rosé from Provence. The Hamptons and California also have some very popular rosés. Even though mine is not the only Bordeaux rosé, I feel it has a very distinctive taste that separates it from the others. It is full bodied but very dry and not sweet. Also, the color is quite light which I prefer.

Describe the place you will enjoy a glass of your rose.

I think my rosé is a great beach drink. I always have it when I am at Le Bilboquet and Dopo in Sag Harbor. Even though it is a great summer drink, it works well in all seasons. We did have a rosé party in Aspen at the Surf Lodge one year and everyone really enjoyed the idea of a winter rosé.

How would you describe the drink to someone who hasn’t tried it?

I always say it is crisp and dry, yet full bodied and goes well with lots of summer fare from crustaceans and steaks to salads and cheese.

Why rosé and not white or red?

I like rosé because it is a less serious wine. I think it is a good place to start, but in the future, I may add to our offering with reds and whites.

How do you view the intersection of fashion design and wine?

I think rosé  is a very sexy wine and it seems that it is a drink of choice at fashion events in the summer. I also think the design of the bottle is very important and a very alluring attribute. Of course, there is nothing worse than a beautiful bottle and bad tasting wine!

If not wine, what’s your favorite cocktail!

In Paris, I used to love Negronis; however, I think I only drink them there! Here, I would more likely order a Martini straight up with a twist!
