The Internet is buzzing and the latest phenomenon is “Pretty Privilege”, this term is by no means new, as this is something we all know and have experienced growing up! Pretty people get ahead and those who are not genetically blessed, have to work hard to be acknowledged or even by “visible” by society.
Most recently, The Icy Queen and Principal of “Pretty B.I.T.C.H.” , Sweetie explained how Pretty Privilege actually worked against her growing up in an interview for Cosmopolitan in March. She expresses that “Pretty Privilege” actually worked against her and while it’s nice to have people admiring your face, it wasn’t the best in her situation.
So What EXACTLY is Pretty Privilege?
“I was judged, rumors were made up about me, and it was kind of always working against me. And it’s just like, for me, I never thought of pretty as glamorizing my existence as a human being.”
She also shares that there are people who abuse their “pretty privilege” by being mean and downright rude to people just because of the power they hold. How many times have we heard “pretty people are mean” or here in Jamaica “a true she know she pretty why she behave suh”. This leads us to believing that “pretty privilege” is also used as a currency in some regards when people might want something but not able to pay for it with money. Sure, this is all part of being a woman and using your assets to work for you, whether its a subtle lean in to let a guy see your cleavage or a simple brush of the hands. This is the ugly -side of pretty privilege according to Saweetie that is rather concerning.

Pretty girls are not identical, of course, since “pretty” is subjective and means different things for different groups of people. Still, there are shared, agreed-upon commonalities. “Pretty” is most often synonymous with being thin, white, able-bodied, and cis, and the closer you are to those ideals, the more often you will be labeled pretty — and benefit from that prettiness. However, here in 2021, things have changed, and though these were the societal standards that deemed a person as “pretty”, we have seen pretty girls from a variety of ethnicities, age, body type and skin tones.
Pretty Privilege allows one to be acknowledged by men and even get access to things others would not and of course getting free drinks in the club. When we look at celebs like Ciara, we can’t deny that sis is gorgeous and while she has many wonderful qualities, Russell saw a pretty face first and was attracted, then he knew the other parts of her personality that were more skin deep. While people keep asking her to share “The Prayer”, she can only do so much as she is just genetically blessed.
Pretty Privilege encapsulates our bias towards people who are genetically blessed and fits into society’s definition of “pretty”. These individuals have an upper hand in getting ahead and will always be the preferred choice in most situations whether it be work, social, romantic and even friendship.
