It is no surprise that I love TV Shows! For starters, they are much better than a full-length movie and they are recorded throughout the year so It’s a “Win-Win” for me. Lately, FOX has made a major comeback and you can tell they are trying to appeal to a younger and mid-range demographic as the shows are better!
One of my latest discoveries is “Call me Kat”.
Call Me Kat is an American sitcom television series largely based on the British sitcom Miranda by Miranda Hart. The series is written by Darlene Hunt and stars Mayim Bialik as the title role, with Cheyenne Jackson, Kyla Pratt, Julian Gant, Leslie Jordan, Vanessa Lachey and Swoosie Kurtz in supporting roles.
Call Me Kat is NOT Unfunny: TV Show Review
Based on Miranda Hart’s self-titled series which ran from 2009 to 2015, the show follows The Big Bang Theory’s Mayim Bialik as Kat, a 39-year-old woman who spends the money set aside by her parents for her wedding to open a cat café.
The first episode starts with Kat explaining why she started a “Cat Cafe” and convinces the viewer that even though she is single, she enjoys her life. She loves her friends, her job, and just life in general. The thing that sets this show apart is the way she breaks the fourth wall and speaks to the camera (her audience) as if they are actually there with her and can give their opinions on things that are happening. We are introduced to her Best friend from childhood who seems to have everything together and is on the brink of planning her wedding (for a second one) since the first one wasn’t perfect and Kat can only attend if she has a date. Kat does not have a date but opts to go with her “flamboyant” co-worker at the cafe who shows up in a snazzy sequence jacket and even better dance moves and they have a great time.
Kat runs into a former “college flame” who is back in town after living in Paris and being on break from his seemingly perfect girlfriend who later becomes the benchmark for perfection and an annoying voice of reason throughout the series. I must admit, the accent is Tres’ bad! I’m guessing that’s the point.
As Kat is weird and quirky, things between them are awkward to say the least but cute and you can’t help but cheer for her and hope that she gets one step closer to being with the ” hot guy”. She knocks over drinks (twice), drops other items, and even kicks the guy in his nose just because she is just so awkward.
Based on the reviews, most people are saying the show is not funny and even a snooze fest, but I think it’s actually not that bad — that is if you are the target demographic. I’m sure if you are older than 40 you probably cannot relate.
Call me Kat is sweet, aspirational, and light-hearted and exactly what we need to break up the craziness of what is happening in the world.
