It is true what they say “Jamaicans are everywhere”! New York is a melting pot of cultures and not short of Jamaicans! We have done our rounds at New York Fashion Week where we met a few other “yardies” who are putting in the work and making a name for themselves.
During our search of Black Designers and Models at this Season’s NYFW, we came across an Interesting Collection from Jamaican Native Edvin Thompson who showcased his THEOPHILIO SPRING-SUMMER 2021.
AN ODE TO ROCKERS, A MUSICAL JAMAICAN DRAMA.
“I wanted people to know that it’s very possible for a kid from Jamaica to come to America … and I really created a space for myself,”
— said designer Edvin Thompson, creative director of his contemporary clothing brand. His island roots anchored into New York City’s progressive culture, and the result is we the birth of blended cultures making Theophilio wearable biography.
THEOPHILIO SPRING-SUMMER 2021 -JAMAICA COMES TO NYFW
With the use of upcycled clothing, double denim makes a genderf*ck appearance; deconstructed blazers are paired with covetable dyed jeans, and baby doll dresses in citron and cotton candy pastel hues see new life. Crushed velvet pants are styled with a live snake for a necklace, elongated sleeves on button-downs with embroidered logos, and classic mesh tank tops get a beaded fringe treatment for movement (for the Theophilio customer, there will most likely be dancing).
We liked that he used this collection to showcase popular places and “everyday life scenes” in Jamaica in the backdrop of his photos. A few of the pieces were inspired by Dancehall with his use of the popular “Rasta Coloured Merina” with black, green, gold, and red with the 90s bashment hairstyle to finish the look. It was a great way to combine Jamaica with New York and he was able to portray this in a tasteful yet truthful manner.
