Beeny Bud

Ashley Rousseau and her line of fine woven goods put a modern twist on the popular straw bags + other items often seen in craft stores across the Island and given as keepsakes.  According to Rousseau, ” Straw heritage of Jamaica expresses craftsmanship of local Artisans – a dying art that needs to be resurrected”. The collection was in collaboration with Keneea Linton-George and featured the popular circular straw bag that is highly sought after by Bloggers, Influencers, and Fashion Influencers worldwide.

About the Beeny Bud 2020 Collection as expressed by Ashley Rousseau

Inspired by the lush landscapes of Jamaica’s rural countryside, this year’s Beenybud Collection mixes St. Catherine’s jippi jappa straw and St. Elizabeth’s thatch with eco-conscious elements such as upcycled horn and conch as well as palm nut seeds and local cedar wood to create a line of clutches, handbags, and totes that are on trend with global luxury labels’ emphasis on sustainable fashion this season.

Meiling Inc

Meiling Esau and Anthony Reid presented ” A Quiet Space” | Spring /Summer 2020 Capsule Collection borne out of the challenging COVID-19 Pandemic that allowed her to slow down for a few moments and take note of all the things around her like a hummingbird who visited the plants each day or something as simple as how the plants bloomed. The collection featured her signature all-white aesthetic in beautiful flowy dresses that are fun, flirty, and feminine and menswear pieces including loose-fitting pants and shirts that are light and airy that can be worn all year round and are easily deemed as staple pieces.

Key Takeaway

Caribbean Fashion has a presence in the global market. Though we might not be the best at Mass Production, we do bespoke and one of a kind pieces well.  There is a certain luxury and sense of pride that comes with owning something that is “locally made” from any of our Caribbean Designers; it says we are a people who are resilient, innovative, and of course creative.

As Caribbean people, we should be keen on investing in our local talent and pay them the prices they set BEFORE looking to invest in international designers who are more established that will do nothing for our culture.
