One of the biggest trends in this era is more people moving away from cash based transactions to digital types of transactions. These transactions inclusive of hard cash and other physical forms of payment are quickly being replaced with Cashless Payment Solutions.
Wipay Online Payment Solution Caribbean
The Caribbean’s leading Digital Payment Service Provider; WiPay makes it easy for people to transfer money to each other, and also pay for goods and services. Essentially, the company allows anything connected to the Internet to move money quickly, safely, and easily for the ‘Banked’ and for the ‘Unbanked’. With the recent changes in the economy that sees fewer people using cash in their daily lives, the solution could not have come at a better time!
What is a Cashless System
So what is a Cashless System? According to WiPay CEO Aldwyn Wayne: “It’s essentially not using cash as we understand it, that is physical paper cash – payments are done using a mobile wallet, debit or credit card or bank card or Digital Fiat. There are a number of ways that you can avoid using cash. WiPay’s approach is unique, compared to the Mobile Wallet solutions on the market. Our approach is where you send and receive a payment, without creating a specific account or downloading a specific app. It allows everyone to partake in this system; we essentially use your email, a phone number, and your name as your unique identifier. So unlike other wallets on the market, you don’t need to download an app. If (for example) I am the Government and I’m to distribute cash to anyone in Jamaica I can use a phone number and email as my identifier, then my unique code that is sent through WhatsApp as an SMS I can use that to do my transactions. You can use this code anywhere within our ecosystem”.
The Cashless Payment Solution Introduced at Jamaica’s First Cashless Farmer’s Market
This Cashless Payment Solution was recently introduced to Jamaica at a Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) Farmer’s Market where patrons got to experience the solution first hand. This process was seamless and aided with the usual long lines as patrons simply went to the WiPay tent, paid using a Debit/Credit Card then received something similar to “mobile air time” (Phone Credit) deemed as the stored value, then a unique or QR Code was sent to their phone, this was then scanned and they proceeded to collect the goods. Easy, seamless, and convenient were words used to describe the solution as the process literally took two seconds.
Mr. Wayne expressed that though the solution was teased to the Jamaican market at a Soft Launch last year; COVID-19 accelerated the process as there was a greater need for it. He emphasized that the technology used at the Farmers Market does not require persons to download a specific app or sign up for a service to use which is what sets it apart from other mobile wallets.
“Anybody in the country can use it at any gas station or grocery store—once the government or the owner of the program approves their location, they business would have to sign up and register to use it”.
Plans for Expansion
As it relates to expansions in Jamaica, there are plans for expansions there are talks of a pre-paid Master Card, however, that is still in the infancy stage and is it will require Bank of Jamaica approvals
