The Lowkey Recap

Issa Rae is at it again with her highly popular HBO series “Insecure” that is back for it’s fourth (4) season. The show as you know follows the life of Issa Dee a 29-year-old LA native and her friends as they navigate the challenges of relationships, jobs, and life, in general, is not so fun situations. We are glad that Issa and her team listened and extended the episodes to an hour and added more episodes than the previous seasons. If you are not yet caught up, here is a quick rundown of  “what had happened” so far (without spoilers)

Molly and Asian Bae
Molly and Asian Bae

Molly finally has a new bae and wait for it … its #Asianbae! Though things started out rocky, in true Insecure fashion where they did the “hooking up” no strings attached thing, that got old really quickly. As the show progresses, we see that Molly got in her own head and started to over analyze the situation and wondered if it’s worth it and claim to be “just chilling”. She finally decides to ask where she stands and for the relationship to be defined and to her surprise, #Asianbae is on the same page and opts for an exclusive relationship!

Insecure Season 4
Issa gives her speech at the launch for Block Party

On to Issa! In this season, we see our girl on the path to true glow up! We see her plans for “Block Party” coming to fruition so much that she hires an assistant in the form of a PR person named Condola to help her. Things are going well and it’s picking up traction but as they say “If it’s too good to be true, then it isn’t” and we learn that Condola is Lawrence’s, new bae. Yes! Issa’s old Boyfriend Lawrence. Can Issa just get a break?  Things get really awkward when Condola learns of this and is a little taken aback by it all. Lawrence learns that the two know each other and is making jokes at his expense and the feel the need to contact Issa and ask her to politely stay out of his business. The nerve of that guy – he is like that ex who comes back the minute he sniffs success and happiness in your life. Can I get Amen ladies?

Insecure Season 4
Lawrence stops by Issa’s Apartment to tell her to “mind her business”
Insecure Season 4
Issa and Condola have a Coffee Break to discuss Block Party and Lawrence??!

Moving on – things are strained between Molly and Issa as they seem to be over each other’s shiz! Issa is tired of Molly ruining relationships because she is seemingly difficult and picks apart every relationship and is standing in the way of her own happiness. Molly feels Issa needs to stop pretending she is over Lawrence and is cool with working with Condola though she knows she is with Lawrence. Oh the Mess! This reminds me of Girlfriends when Toni and Joan were pretty much over each other and the situation would arise where they needed the support of the other but chose another person who they were not close with. I think, their friendship has expired a bit as they are now different people since the show started and are in different phases of their lives so it’s hard to connect. Molly is established in her career and made a partner at her Law firm and Issa is just getting started and is trying to figure things out.

We were also left with a cliffhanger in Episode 3 where Lawrence found out he was the rebound for Condola who by the way is Divorced and is not interested in Marriage ever again! They eventually break up and “Lawrence does what Lawrence does” by liking a story from Issa on Instagram and then talking to her.

In some ways, I like how real they wrote this show and in other ways, I’m annoyed at both Issa and Lawrence. Also!  I think they messed up significantly with the hair on the show! What is up with Condola having braid in the morning, a high ponytail midday then back to braids by evening. Whew, chile! They need to get it right.

Let me know if you’ve watched this season and what your thoughts are thus far!

*I’ve intentionally left out a lot to not ruin it for people who might not have seen this season*
