What I learned from a Fall from Grace

When I saw that Tyler Perry had a new movie on Netflix, I was excited. I know he has been receiving a lot of negative comments since revealing that he writes his own scripts for all his productions, I was still intrigued.

A Fall from Grace is a Psychological Thriller released on January 17, 2020. Disheartened since her ex-husband’s affair, Grace Waters feels restored by a new romance. But when secrets erode her short-lived joy, Grace’s vulnerable side turns violent.

I like that all Tyler’s movies always have a theme and a lesson at the end which usually explores Black Culture and is usually based on “Women in Society” or “Man versus Natural” and other typical literary themes. There are a few things that stood out to me that had me thinking deeper than what was presented on the surface and I could say these are what I learned from the Movie.

I must be completely honest and let you know that it took me a while to get through this movie as it was 2 hours long (or thereabout) and I was triggered. This is the 2nd time I was triggered by a movie not based on personal experience but it felt so real I wanted to punch one of the characters and throw him down a well or similar to what Grace did in the end.

1. Age Doesn’t matter when it comes to love

Grace is a more mature woman, I’m not sure if her age was revealed but I would guess she would be in her early 50’s. At Grace’s age, there are some things that a woman should already know based on the experiences she’s had but we see this was not the case with her. She fell in love and let her guard down and then things came crashing down — no matter how old you are, there are some things love doesn’t prepare you for. In the words of Eve, “Love is Blind” and in some cases, deaf and dumb too.

2. If It’s too good to be true… It probably Isn’t

How many times have you heard this and end up learning the hard way? One too many! We should always be aware of those people who come with lips sweet as honey, bearing gifts and constant, questionable interest. The guy (I won’t give too much away) played the part of the handsome, charming, young man who seemingly had it all together but that was just on the surface. Sometimes when we are in a situation like this, it is important to step back and really weigh the situation and look out for signs and red flags.

3. Never give all your trust to anyone

I know there are really great, amazing, wonderful people out there, but there is a thing called “human nature” that dims all those qualities. In the movie, Grace fell in love hard and fast and quickly gives all her trust to a stranger .. yes, he was a stranger as they had a roller-coaster relationship and boy was she in for a ride. No matter how good you think a person is, do not give them all your trust.

4. Never tell people your weakness and insecurities

The guy in the movie had things all planned out .. he sought after a particular type of woman who was weak, lonely and financially secure as he said in one scene. Grace told him her insecurity of not feeling desirable after walking in on her husband with a young secretary. He used this back on her to get into her head and played on her emotion with the information she gave him.

5. Your best friend could become your worst enemy

I will be very vague with this point as it’s the climax in the movie so just know your best friend can become your worst enemy in a heartbeat. I’ll end it here and hope you’ll watch the movie yourself.

Let me know if you watched the movie and if you liked it!
