“An Investment in knowledge pays the best interest” – Benjamin Franklin
If you live in a Caribbean household you will know that getting an education and being educated is held to high esteem. In fact, once you are at least 2 1/2 years old and is potty-trained and can walk and talk, you are sent to school. This then goes all the way up to University where you then graduate and get a well-paying job (in some cases) and for some, this is where it ends.
For many of us Millennials, our journey has re-started and we are back in school learning the necessary skills to compete in this new Digital world earn more money and become experts in our respective fields. This is the case for me when I decided to go back to school a few months ago. In August of 2019, I started a Digital Marketing Program and I never thought it was possible. Looking back it was something I wrote on my vision board but didn’t actually think It would manifest– I felt there was a missing piece to the puzzle in my life and being a certified Digital Marketer was seemingly that.

I must admit it was hard as I was now juggling work and school plus life in general and worst of all I had to pay this tuition by myself which I’m still paying for on a weekly basis!! The round of “adult schooling” was at the age of 19 years old which was completely funded by my father so no Big deal. This time I knew I had to be very intentional so I pushed through all the challenges, made a schedule and things were looking up until it hit me. “I’m in my 30’s and back in school” when people would ask what I’m doing and I would say “oh I have a class today” they would look at me as If I had two heads and I can completely understand. Here in Jamaica, people, yes people who have no business telling you stuff, like to put a timeline on YOUR life — by your 30s you are expected to have everything figured out and happily married with kids so why are you in school??
If you are like me and is on the fence about going back to school in your 30’s because you think you might be too old, here are a few things that might motivate you:
1. There is the Option to go Online
Times are modern and you do not have to go to a physical classroom to learn. The program I’m doing has an option for “Virtual Learning” and I like this option better than being in the classroom. I would usually have to drive to the school after work, in traffic after a long day and sit in a cold classroom for 2 hours! When I opt for “Virtual Learning ” and log-on from the comfort of my home, I’m much more relaxed and actually retain more information. If you are not one who likes to sit in a classroom for hours, Online learning might be the best fit for you. Be sure to consider this as an option — also, going Online offers you access to worldwide courses at your fingertips. With this option, you are not limited to Jamaica or your home country.

2. Show me the Money — Raise, Promotion + More Clients
What is the best thing that sweetens labor? Money! Think of going back to school as an advancement in your career. There are some companies here in Jamaica that pay according to your level of education and the more educated you are the more you will be paid. I have never heard anybody complaining about making more money, have you? Thought it might seem daunting, look at this time as a small portion of your life to take you one step closer to living your dream life. In retrospect, it really is just a small portion of your life compared to the rest of your life. Take it one step at a time and use that promotion or getting new clients because of your new knowledge and paper!
In this day and age, going back to school is necessary. The world is now digital and if you are not well equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge the world will literally pass you by.
As the scripture says “Study to show thyself approved” we should always be looking to be experts in our fields through learning regardless of our age.
