Today is observed as World Vegetarian Day and we thought we would do something different! We will attempt to also write this post in Jamaican Creole (Patois/Pawta) and we’ll be talking all about cruelty-free make-up!
Since more people are starting to become more aware of how their makeup is made and the ingredients used, there is a greater appreciation for cruelty + vegan-friendly make-up – what exactly is that you might ask? We are about to break it all down for you, keep reading!
Vegan refers to make-up that doesn’t include any animal products while cruelty-free is make-up that has not been tested on animals. The process by which the make-up was made is a lot less harsh to both humans and animals.
They differ from traditional makeup because they do not contain any harmful chemicals. Things tend to get a bit confusing when we hear “vegan-friendly” as this means that some, if not most, products or ingredients are vegan – basically, not everything is plant-based.

What do vegan and environmentally friendly cosmetics look like?
Their company is transparent. You can easily find the ingredient list and they set a mission statement that clearly defines their initiatives for marketing healthy products without the use of any animals. Popular brands are Beauty Bakerie, Lush and The Body Shop. They use minerals and plant-based ingredients. Look at the full ingredient list to see what is in your cosmetics. Oils, nut butter, herbs, and plant ingredients are a must. Certified organic ingredients are also important.
Friendly and open to answering questions. If you are not sure if a company is vegan, contact them. Do they give you a direct and simple answer? “Yes, we are 100% vegan!” If not, I would suggest trying a different company.
Though cruelty-free and vegan-friendly makeup might be a bit more expensive as the process is lengthier, it is highly recommended for the health of your skin and your health in general. We challenge you to include a few of these options in your make-up collection—thank us later.
