Lucy Sandals is a small local business located in Kingston Jamaica. It was founded in 2015 by Lucean Slater, affectionately known as Lucy. The business is operated single-handedly by this young female who was self-taught on how to construct these unique pieces. The Haute Lifestyle caught up with Lucy to see what’s up for Summer 2018.
THP: What makes the perfect “Summer Sandal?”
LUCY: The perfect summer sandal is the seamless balance of aesthetic appeal and comfort; the perfect sandal should do more than just air conditioning your feet; they must also allow your feet to say hello to the world while feeling good and looking great at the same time. At LucySandals, our goal is to provide our customers with exactly that, and so far, we have managed to create stylish sandals that are never at the expense of comfort and foot health. In addition, our unique designs are excellent fashion accessories which breathe new life into existing outfits. Our sandals are the perfect summer sandals – chic, ultra-feminine, adjustable, and durable. Need proof? Check out our tassel Bohemian. It’s very colorful and playful. This design can be worn with almost anything.

THP: Tell us how you started “Lucy Sandals Company JA”?
LUCY: My passion for hand-made sandals is really the brainchild to this company. Sandals have always been my go-to footwear because they are versatile and light-weighted. You just can’t go wrong with sandals! I grew up appreciating the works of many local and international designers, and as a kid, would often look at people’s feet and imaginatively recreate their footwear. It was always my dream to make stylish sandals, but the dream quelled in my adulthood and only resurged a couple years ago when I had wanted to buy a pair of local sandals but could not afford them. That’s really what encouraged me to make my own pair. I told myself I would and that’s exactly what I did. I bought the necessary tools and materials, and then made my very own pair of unique LucySandals. Though my family and friends have always been impressed with and supportive of my work, I only realized I had found a business when persons would run up to me at the supermarket, the beach, the movies, etc., to find out where I had bought my sandals. Many offered to pay me to make sandals for them, after learning I had made them myself. That outpour of support increased incessantly, and that’s how LucySandals came to be.

THP: You are a self-taught artisan. How exactly did you learn the sandal making process?
LUCY: I am naturally a crafty person, so I was able to learn the skill easily by watching YouTube videos. The local artisans in Downtown Kingston also steered me in the right direction.
THP: What does a typical day for you look like?
LUCY: A typical day is rather hectic. As I am still in the infancy stage of my business, I still have a 9-5 job. When I get home from that job, the rest of my day is reserved for making sandals. And since the business is solely dependent on me, I have no social life at this moment. After corresponding with customers, making sandals and shipping them, and executing mommy duties, I am fully exhausted. 2:00am and later has become my new bedtime; however, this schedule is to change very soon. I am currently making moves to ensure this.
THP: Finish the sentence … “On a chill day you can find me ….
LUCY: At the beach. I looove the beach! It relaxes me.
THP: What would you say makes your brand “stand out” from other sandal brands?
LUCY: Our sandals are vibrant! They have exotic textures and are available in a wide range of colors and designs. The fact that they are made to order is also a plus, as this allows us to address the unique needs of each customer’s feet.
iii. At LucySandals, customers’ satisfaction is our highest priority! Therefore, we take great pride in completing orders as expeditiously and effectively as possible, ensuring that our sandals reflect high standards of quality. It is important our customers understand that their concerns are important to us, so we listen keenly to their feedback and are always trying to find ways to enhance our products and improve our service.
iv. Our sandals are reasonably priced, can be cleaned easily and are always comfortable.
THP: What can we expect from you in coming months?
LUCY: In the coming months, expect big things: new designs, as I’m always thinking of something new, something fresh to grace my customers with; a better, more efficient service, and more partnerships. Our business is small now, but as we continue to grow, so will our standards and our reach.

LUCY: Currently, I can only be found on Instagram @lucysandalsja, but I’ll be launching my website soon… so you guys should definitely stay tuned for that.
