My hair and I have not always had the best relationship! As a young black girl living in the Caribbean, the easiest thing back then for 11-year old me was a “press and curl” I got that one time I went to Atlanta Georgia for a wedding. Fast-forward to 13 and I got the dreaded much-anticipated relaxer as a reward for passing my exams and going to high school which was the norm for most of us at that time. As I got older my relationship with my hair turned toxic and I had every style imaginable under the sun except dreadlocks which I considered for a moment but had a change of heart because I’m easily bored and would probably hate it and would chop it all off and start over. I eventually tried the natural life in 2015 but in 2016 I went to the hairdresser on a whim and told her to give me a chemical relaxer and cut it all off into a pixie cut.
Things were great with my pixie cut! I looked hot, edgy, and cool until I had another change of heart and went back to weaves then in 2017 I chopped it all off again and continued this vicious cycle until 2019 where I was between relaxers and weaves. One dreadfully hot summery day in 2019, I went to the hairdresser as I always do for a relaxer where she also suggested a nice color to add more dimensions for which I opted out of. I was then given what I thought was a treatment which was her putting permanent dye on freshly relaxed hair and within a week after this, I had no edges! Things were going well and my edges were slowly starting to fill in and I was confident again.
