When you’re in university you’re expected to be the broke college kid hoping to earn a degree that won’t leave them starving. But why wait until you’re out of university to start making money? You still have expenses and here are some options that can alleviate some of your financial burdens.
1. Summer Internships/ Jobs (and yes there is a difference)
This is probably the most obvious option for students because the summer presents so much time and so many possibilities to do something worthwhile. Though we use the terms interchangeably, I feel the need to clarify that a summer job is done mainly for the money, whereas a summer internship is more career-oriented and has the benefit of providing meaningful work experience, along with the money. Unless you’re in summer school, you’ll be able to work a 40-hour week and earn more, without having to worry about schoolwork. However, depending on your expenses, the money may not last long and you might have to look at the other options on this list for a steady stream of income during the school year.

})();
2. Jobs on Campus
People seem to forget or take for granted that there are businesses and organizations on campus that need employees and are more than willing to hire students. Depending on the university you attend or the faculty that you’re in, you might be eligible to become a research assistant or a lab technician. And you can’t tell me that your campus doesn’t have a bookstore, because chances are, they are also willing to hire students. The best part about these jobs is that you can schedule around your classes (because these places are more than aware that you’re a student) and you won’t have to worry about the commute time and cost between work and class because you’re already on campus. Jobs on campus will provide you with a steady paycheck, albeit not the best salary. Nevertheless, I implore you to ask around and look on a notice board once in a while.

3. Use your own skills and start your own business
Everybody has something that they are really good at, and if you know what that something is and can market it, then you can turn a profit on it. This skill could be anything – writing, cooking, tutoring, makeup application, graphic design. You might even have a secondary skill, such as being a great salesman. And if your target market is the student body then you’ve just struck gold, because I am a firm believer that at university, anything can sell (with the right marketing). Your business venture stands to put more money in your pocket with the added bonus of being your own boss. However, this might not be the best option for those of us with poor time management skills. If you can balance student life with being an entrepreneur then do what you do best and make some money off of it.
Regardless of these possibilities for earning while studying, you must always remember that:
· You came to university primarily to earn a degree, so don’t allow your quest to make some money be at the expense of your education. Make a schedule and don’t take on any job that pushes your studies to second place.
· Finally, earning all this money doesn’t mean anything if you have no idea how to save or spend it wisely so you may need to create a budget or start a savings account in order to manage your money.
