If you’re a Jamaican, you know that the word “Saint” is synonymous with an ardent churchgoer and an international model. And in the world of fashion, it’s definitely the latter that comes to mind!
Jamaica’s Saint International Modelling Agency Hosts Glitzy Avant Garde Competition to Empower Youth and Celebrate Fashion Heritage
Last Sunday, fashion enthusiasts, public figures, and dignitaries gathered at the AC Marriott Hotel in Kingston for the much-awaited “Jamaica Avant Garde Designer of the Year and Fashion Face of the Caribbean Competition.” After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the event returned in full swing, with the same high energy and grandeur production that the Saint brand is known for.
Fashion Face of the Caribbean Competition
Over 82 young men and women competed for the coveted title of “Fashion Face of the Caribbean,” which would land them a contract with international agencies, training sessions, and a spot at Saint International Modelling Agency. After deliberation by a panel of local judges and model scouts and agents, TK Wilson was named the Male Face of the Caribbean, while Drucillah Campbell was named the Female Face of the Caribbean.
This competition isn’t just about selecting the “best of the best,” but also about empowering youth with opportunities based on their innate skills and talents. Model hopefuls are scouted from various communities across the island, giving them a chance to shine. Saint also offered other youths the chance to be volunteers at the event, which also allowed them to build their confidence, learn how to network, and also what it means to be a part of a production. As it relates to Youth being exposed to opportunities, State Minister in the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment, and Sport, Hon. Alando Terrelonge, had the following to say:
“The vision of Saint aligns with the vision of the government… Over the last two decades, Saint has continued to change the lives of ordinary Jamaicans”.
Avant Garde Designer of the Year Competition
The competition also featured the popular “Avant Garde Designer of the Year Competition,” which saw new and seasoned designers competing for a cash prize of $60,000. The winner of this year’s competition was Janseen Graham with his design “Jamrock Fusion.” Graham’s design pays homage to the island’s rich fashion heritage, with vibrant colors and the warmth of the sunshine.
His outfit features a Jamaican print kimono that transforms into a bold red jumpsuit that reflects the versatility and adaptability of Jamaican fashion.
While the judges deliberated, patrons were also treated to a Fashion Heritage segment that featured designs from Tashaandtianne Fashions Ja, Kadian Nicely, and Pebbles King. Each designer showcased their signature pieces while incorporating elements of the “Jamaica 60” theme.
A Stellar Lineup of Performers
In true Saint fashion, patrons were treated to several performances by Yeza, Irie Souljah, Zac Jones, and D’Angel.
D’Angel, a longtime supporter of the Saint brand, reminded the audience that though she once graced the runways for brands like Rocawear, she has not retired and delighted the audience with hits like “Blaze,” “No Worries,” and “Baby Fadda,” just to name a few!
As the Jamaican fashion industry slowly starts to become vibrant again, events such as the “Jamaica Avant Garde Designer of the Year and Fashion Face of the Caribbean Competition” are the perfect platform to showcase the creativity and talent of the island’s fashion industry.
We were thrilled to be a part of this amazing event, and we can’t wait to see what’s next for the Saint brand and the Jamaican fashion industry!
