Elaine Thompson-Herah: Jamaica
The Fastest woman alive with record breaking Olympic Win
Jamaican native, Elaine Thompson-Herah broke a 33 year old Olympic record when she won gold in the 100 meter dash at the Tokyo Games. She crossed the finish line in just 10.61 seconds, making her the fastest woman ever to run the 100 meters in the Olympic Games.
Robyn “Rihanna” Fenty: Barbados
The Bajan singer was named National Hero by the Prime Minister of Barbados
The award of National Hero was established in 1998, to recognize the most influential and successful figures in Barbados’s history and those who are awarded the title will be referred to as National Heroes and addressed as “The Right Excellent ”. Rihanna was also named a Billionaire earlier in 2021.
Michaela Coel: United Kingdom
The First Black Woman to Win an Emmy for Limited Series Writing
Michaela took home the honour for her series “I May Destroy You” which pulls on her personal experience with sexual assault which earned raving reviews. During her acceptance speech, she expressed “Write the tale that scares you, that makes you feel uncertain, that isn’t comfortable, I dare you”.
Amanda Gorman: America
The 23 year old is the youngest American Poet to ever perform a spoken work piece at a Presidential Inauguration.
She is also an award-winning writer and cum laude graduate of Harvard University, where she studied Sociology.
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala : Nigeria
The first woman and first African to lead the World Trade Organization
Ngozi was unanimously chosen by WTO’s 164 members to be it’s new Director General. She previously served as Nigeria’s Finance Minister and Foreign Minister, making her the first woman to hold both positions.
Vanessa Kingori MBE: United Kingdom
British Vogue’s first female business lead in their 105 year history and Conde Nast Britain’s first Black Publisher.
Vanessa is a multi-award winning businesswoman, diversity proponent and mother. As the Chief Business Officer at Conde’ Nast brands including: Vogue, GQ, Wired, Vanity Fair, Glamour, Tatler and more.
Viola Davis: United States
The most nominated Black actress in Oscars History
Viola is the only Black woman to be nominated twice for best actress. She said ” if I go back to the Oscars four times in 2021 it makes me the most nominated Black actress in history, that’s a testament to the sheer lack of material there has been for artists of color.
Shenseea: Jamaica
Dancehall star Shenseea continues to have a blessed year, after copping the 2021 Music Of Black Origin (MOBO) Award for Best Reggae Act. She’s the first female artist to win the Reggae Award since its inception in 1996.
Mia Mottley: Barbados
Mia Mottley is the Prime Minister of Barbados and has been doing amazing things.
Ahead of the General Election scheduled for January 19, 2022, she made the announcement that Barbados is now a Republic. This means the country is now saying goodbye to the British monarchy and is now operating without the Queen as the head.
Terri-Karelle Reid: Jamaica
TEDxAshtonUniversity Speaker
Dr. Terri-Karelle Reid won the Miss Jamaica World title in 2005. Since then, she has built a tremendous brand based on authenticity and excellence where she is a highly sought after speaker and M.C at a number of Corporate events locationally and internationally.
In 2021, Terri Karelle Reid was a speaker at TEDxAstonUniversity in Birmingham, United Kingdom where her talk focused on identity ownership in a legal capacity. This “Jamaican Girl” was the only Jamaican Female on the platform alongside Jamaica’s Zachary Harding. This is a major moment!
