And Just Like that .. the Sex and The City Reboot premiered on December 9, 2021 on HBOMAX.

The highly anticipated series left a lot of individuals feeling like something was missing .. and no, we’re not talking about Samantha!

If you are a fan of the show you will know exactly what I’m talking about, if not, that’s what we’ll be talking about today. There will be a little bit of spoilers so if you haven’t watched .. skip this Blog Post.

The Premise

and just like that
Carrie and Big
The women of “Sex and the City” transition from the friendship they had in their 30s to a more complicated reality of life and friendship in their 50s. Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis return as Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte, respectively, whereas Samantha has moved to London since Kim Cattrall chose not to reprise her role. Chris Noth, Mario Cantone, David Eigenberg and Evan Handler all return to portray their characters from the original series. Willie Garson, who died Sept. 21, 2021, appears as Stanford Blatch in his final television role.
The show now sees the women in their 50’s and 60s –they have aged and are matured and we are also introduced to a new cast member Lisa Todd-Wexley played by Nicole Ari Parker.
There are light jokes about age and colouring of hair where there was subtle shade thrown at Charlotte’s character for wanting to remain young by dying her hair which is “Art Imitating Life”. Kristin was newly-obvious face life was a topic of discussion when photos of the series was released earlier this year.

Charlotte, Carrie and Miranda
If lazy writing was a series, it would definitely be this one. They killed a major character in the first episode whose death was a little questionable since she literally came home to see him suffering from a heart-attack (for hours) and instead of calling for help, she ran to him and dragged his body a bit across the phone.  Sure we can say she was in shock or disbelief or maybe both , but there is no substitute for lazy writing. There are talks that he only signed on for 1 episode but killing him was a bit lazy when compared to doing something “BIG” like a divorce. It was soon revealed that the character’s death could have been due to his new allegations of “assault” in the media which has seen several individuals and projects dropping him as a client. At this point, we will never know.

And Just Like that .. Nicole Ari Parker

While we are on a roll, let’s talk about Nicole Ari’s Parker  character Lisa’s hair in the series, why do they continue to give Black characters  “bad wigs” in predominantly white films? Aren’t there Black hairstylists to ensure the wigs are “laid” correctly? This series has an extensive wardrobe so why didn’t they think of hair since this is a big deal in the “Black Community” whether individuals are rich or poor. Hair is a part of the Black identity and there is so many textures and so many styles that can be done because versatility of the texture. Sis was walking around with Giuseppe Zanotti heels and a torn up wig! Make it make sense

Where is the series going with this weird love Triangle with Miranda, Che and Dr. Nya? We are all for diversity and being inclusive, but again — “make it make sense”. We see where they are building a story around Miranda and Steve being more like room mates than husband and wife  so it makes room for an additional lover. I’m interested to see how they will allow this story to unfold and I’m somewhat excited to see Miranda getting her groove back and going back to her fiery red roots and her hard talking confidence. Why did they make Steve hard of hearing? How old is Steve?

I also like that the kids Lily, Rose and Brady. This could be a spin-off by itself and I’m interested to also see where the story goes. I do believe the Mom of a girly -girl who is a Tomboy or boy troupe has been done but it’s 2021 and might take an interesting turn.

Carrie and Miranda

The series thus far is disappointing to say the least, but we will be watching to see how things will play out and we loved that flashback to her Jimmy Choo’s and the updated pink dress and belt moment.
