It has always been my life’s dream to “live in my purpose” since this is what society tells us to do and this is the only societal pressure I’ve given in to.
It makes sense right? You find something you are naturally good at, you put in the work and then share this gift with the world. My gift and purpose is centred around writing — it always has been. It was writing that allowed me to cope during my parent’s divorce, it was writing that got me through University (literally) and it was writing that took me to New York Fashion Week (twice) and being invited to Paris Fashion Week.
Being an Entrepreneur is Hard | Content Marketing Agency
Naturally, the next step would be to make writing work for me, so in September I took the plunge to start my Content Marketing Company where I create Social Media Content for brands in the Lifestyle industry. Things has been interesting to say the least, but in reality, Entrepreneurship is hard! Things happen that no one talks about or that you are ever prepared for.
In my case, I grew too fast which is both good and bad and I was not prepared! Do I now need to take on team members? Can I afford to pay these people? Am I suppose to be negotiating with clients? How do I even deal with difficult clients? What about taxes?! This list went on and on and got longer with each thought.
This new journey has seen me questioning if I made the right choice or should I have stayed in a job I wasn’t too fond of for a steady pay check. Here’s the cold hard truth,
Entrepreneurship is hard because it’s different for all of us and it means different things for so many of us.
I was watching a Fireside chat with Necole Kane of XONecole and Pauleanna Reid where Pauleanna shared that she stayed at her full-time job for 5 years, hired people while she was working at her 9-5 to build her company. By doing this, not only was she bringing in a double income, but the skills she learned from the 9-5 and access she had to key industry players was priceless and allowed her company to grow.
A Few Key Points
If you are on this new journey, always remember a few things:
- Rome wasn’t built in a day
- There will have to be a lot of sacrifices to be made
- It takes 10 years to become an overnight success
- You are exactly where you need to be
- Never take anything personally
- Always be prepared for the good and bad
Conclusion
I take every situation and experience as a lesson that I feel teaches me something new every time and it also gives me just a bit more courage and confidence to take the next step.
