The Art of Covering Events as a Blogger

One of the most asked questions I get is :

” How do you get Invited to Cover Events and How do you actually do it”?

Today, I will be sharing my personal tips on How I cover events as a Blogger.  I promise I will touch on “How I get Invited to Events” in another article.

The Art of Covering Events as a Blogger

First thing’s first, you have to be invited to an event to actually cover the event.  Never, ever show up to an event hoping to get in because you probably won’t get in. Unless you know somebody, which is highly unlikely and they would have already had their plus one so that’s not a good idea. Now that we got the awkward part out the way let’s get to it.

Know your Coverage Format

There are so many ways content can be presented and you need to decide on the way forward. Since this is a Blog, our format is obviously “written” as we like to say, and depending on the event we might throw in a couple of videos for Social Media. Brands like to know what they are getting when they invite you to events so it’s great to know this beforehand. For Eg, if you are a YouTuber, your coverage format will be Video, and to make things interesting, you can do a Vlog of the event or interviews.

Find the Right People

The thing that sets us apart from other Bloggers at events is that we always have a team. I am a great writer and excel at Content Creation but Photography is not my strong suit. Since I want the images to be of high quality and truly tell a visual story of the event, I collaborate with other Photographers. In this Industry, no man is an island and we all have what another person wants. Since I’m the Blogger and have a platform, it’s easier for me to “get in” than for a Photographer who might be very talented but not have a platform or the connections to getting into events. Be sure to not only have verbal agreements but written ones (contracts) between Photographers just to ensure you both benefit from the collaboration.

Always Deliver on Time

Lawd! This is the part where many people are slipping and it needs to stop. When a brand or individual invites you to their event, it’s not just for “looks”. They want to see that you were not just wasted space and you will have something to show at the end of the event. Here at Haute People, we pride ourselves on being efficient and always deliver on time. Our turnaround time is 24- 72 hours no matter what! I understand that juggling a full-time job with a platform like this takes a toll but once you really make up your mind to deliver on time, anything is possible.  Believe it or not, I can “feel the vibe” of the event and know the tone I want to write in and the minute I get home I write a draft and then develop the articles the following day I’ve known of cases here in Jamaica where Bloggers were invited to Fashion events years ago and they did not deliver on the promise and were publicly shamed on Social Media.

I know this was just a taste of Event Coverage as a Blogger, but I am currently working on something more in-depth my wonderful readers can benefit from. Be sure to keep up with our pages on Social Media to be in the know.

I really do hope I was able to help by sharing these tips! If you would still like to know more email us at hautepeople@yahoo.com.
