Your Resume is an accumulation of your education, work experience, accomplishments, and credentials. It is the most important tool when applying for a job as it markets your skills, qualities, and experiences which can land you an interview for your dream job. It does not matter your qualification or job involvement, a poorly written resume will lose you a chance for a job interview.

Here are some tips for writing a Professional Resume:

Tips for Writing a Professional Resume

    1.    Select your resume format.  Depending on the type of job you are applying for, you must choose a suitable format. Whether chronological, functional, or a targeted resume. This will show the potential employer that you have prepared.
      2.    Have a resume objective statement. If you have no work experience or none relating to the job you are applying for it would be recommended that you highlight transferable skills from other areas.  It will display that although you have no experience in relation to the job; you have the experience that is relevant to it.
        3.    Write a career summary.  This is very important. Do your research, state what you have to offer, translate your skills, and list your area of expertise.
       4.    Consistency is the key.  Professional Resumes must have consistent formatting. For example, if you use bullet points to list information in one section ensure that you use the same bullet points in the other sections.
       5.    Be specific but concise.  It is recommended that your resume should be no more the two (2) pages long.  If you have a lot of qualifications, achievements, etc. tailor your resume to the job you are applying for. Remember the aim is to win a job interview.

6.    Make it legible.  Your resume should be easy to read. Therefore, choose an appropriate font such as Times Romans, Arial or Calibri.  Don’t be flashy; be professional in your writing style.

Also, leave sufficient white space on the page to make it easy to scan. Avoid jumbled text and use standard margins.  Prepare your resume on white or cream paper.
7  .    Be creative. If you are in the creative industry you can use a free resume website to build a creative resume. This will have all the elements of a traditional resume, with an add-on like video, infographics, and links to your accomplishments.  However, only do this if you are applying for a job in a creative industry.
8   .    Meticulously edit your resume.  Grammatical and spelling errors can make an applicant seem as if they are not detailed orientedConstant proofreadings are encouraged or get help.  You can have your resume reviewed before sending it to the employer(s).
9   .    Check your Resume.  Make sure you have included all the relevant information.
